SEUN KUTI & EGYPT 80

With special guest Watussi

He is the youngest son of world music icon Fela Kuti, and since his father's death ten years ago, he's being fronting his father's band. Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 perpetuate the supertight sounds of Afrobeat - all funk and jazz and Nigerian sensibility, like James Brown but grittier, much grittier and with a powerful political voice. Funky chopped guitars, screaming brass, ultra-rhythmic drums...
'It's pulsing music, frenetic dance, and pure joy. Egypt 80 remains a revolutionary band.' - The Independent

Thanks for the opportunity and I have never been so eager to see someone perform live as I am of Eno on Sunday evening. Bring him back if only to perform.

Would it not be more appropriate to have an Australian or New Zealand artist curate a Sydney based government-funded festival?

We received many great suggestions of who should curate next year's LUMINOUS festival. Several people suggested David Bowe, and others included Bono, Peter Gabriel, Thom Yorke, Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson, Mike Patton and Brian Eno again because he's done such a great job this year. There were also some interesting ones such as Kylie Minogue and the Dalai Lama! The winner of the two tickets to Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 was Michael Boyadjian who suggested Bjork because "she is eccentric, inspirational and avant-garde."

Who was the winner? What was perceived as the best suggestion?

he hasn't played Sydney yet, are fanboys from Byron rating him? (10 ratings and a perfect 5? on 10June). And the webmaster should remove all the votes for next Luminous director to somewhere more appropriate. And Karen - its Zappa, not Zapper!

Jarvis Cocker - Still one of the most engaging, interesting and funny men in Pop!

I second the suggestion of David Bowie. He curated Meltdown (London, 2002) and Highline (New York, 2007) - he must be due for one over here.

Dweezil Zapper - to continue the theme of the variety and wonderfulness of strange and exotic music extending the views and the inclusive, vibrant culture of the most beautiful city, in the most wonderful setting, on the planet. Thank you for the fabulous memories created so far. Karen

Perhaps Eno again or ask Eno who he would suggest. Ah! how about Atom Egoyan Canadian film maker.

I suggest Peter Gabriel because of his wealth of exp. with WOMAD.

Hettie Perkins, Michael Frante and Shaun Gladwell in any combination would be my picks. With more local and Indigenous content to complement a strong international presence. Keep it authentic and human.

I have to second Judy's Bjork suggestion. That would be out of this world...I am also thinking a co-production with a local artist would be interesting and worthwhile.

What about Joni Mitchell? She includes everyone in her world with her openness. Her early years, foray into jazz and ethnic sounds has given her the respect that has drawn many artists and audiences to follow her. As such she is a leader who could bring many artists together for a cultural festival such as Luminous.

I think Brian Eno should do it again. It has been brilliant this year and with his imagination and this year's experience it may even be better next time.

Peter Gabriel would my choice. He is a artist in the true sense. His connection with "world" music artists is 2nd to none. Peter has a background that is impeccable. His experience with Womadelaide speaks for it's self.

Laurie Anderson could be good. She seems to like Sydney and has a few handy connections in the music/art world

David Bowie should do next year's luminous. He's spent a whole career observing the past and while at the same time trail brazing

Anthony

I should curate the next Luminous. My imagination stretches far enough to produce a stunning event.

Paul

Bjork should curate the next Lunimous she would be excellent in both music and vis arts and shes a dynamo or Nick Cave though he did a gig last year on Cockatoo island
