PURE SCENIUS

Experience Brian Eno performing live onstage for the first time ever in Australia!

Prepare for PURE SCENIUS when the LUMINOUS mastermind joins forces with Underworld's Karl Hyde, guitarist Leo Abrahams, synthesist Jon Hopkins and Australia's undisputed maestros of improvised minimalism - The Necks.

One day. Three improvised concerts. Two intervals. Each concert picks up where the other left off. Choose your own one, two or three part adventure in sound and vision. The first concert is based on a predetermined sequence of events and parts two and three will progress from there - each will have its similarities, each will have its differences. Like a laboratory conducting an undisclosed experiment, PURE SCENIUS will be a combustible, spontaneous, must-see mix of intellect, innovation and instrumentation.

And the experiment goes beyond audio; offstage Toby Vogel will be filming, mixing, re-processing and projecting layers of imagery on three massive screens - just like he does for Underworld's live shows.

Whether you're fascinated by process or performance, improvisation or collaboration, minimalism or chaos, you need to experience the grand finale to the LUMINOUS festival.

Concert structure
Go to one, go to two, or go to them all! You've got three options. You decide.

Option 1: see any one concert in the series and pay $60
Option 2: see any two concerts in the series and pay $120
Option 3: for the complete experience, see all three concerts and pay $180

PURE SCENIUS PERFORMERS: ALL OF THEM ON STAGE AT THE ONE TIME

Karl Hyde is the poet and voice of Underworld... lager, lager, lager - remember the track Born Slippy at the end of Trainspotting? In the early 90s, along with band mates Rick Smith and Darren Emerson, Hyde assimilated techno into the art-rock tradition, lacing pulverising rhythms with frantic cut-up lyrics, eccentric humour, subtle textures and waves of improvisation.

Jon Hopkins is a musical shapeshifter: a composer, pianist and a self-taught studio wizard. He makes affecting, bold electronic music using walls of synths, lustrous melodies and amorphous bass rumbles. Co-producing Coldplay's Viva La Vida with Eno, his own ethereal compositions transcend genres, melding digital coldness with subtle, bucolic textures; veering from simple elegance to strange, unsettling sonic depths.

The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia. Pianist Chris Abrahams, drummer Tony Buck and bass player Lloyd Swanton conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. Working in every field from pop to avant-garde, the deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing.

Discovered by Eno tinkering on a guitar in a music shop, Britain's Leo Abrahams has since worked with the man himself as well as Paul Simon, Grace Jones and Nick Cave. An uncompromising and innovative musician, he pushes the guitar to new levels. Rejecting traditional techniques such as sampling, sequencing and computer effects, he instead relies on ambient sounds generated exclusively by the guitar to create pure music unaffected by commercial considerations.

The 3 concerts we went to were awesome. Loved the crescendos of sound and white noise with so much depth. The stage comfort ie - patch of grass, dome tent, couches and calming voice of Brian Eno added such a great feeling to the whole event. No wonder - he is a Taurus with the genius mark of Jupiter opposed Uranus. Visuals of the VJ especially the Sydney ferry animation was very cool.

With over 50 albums of Eno's solo and collaborations in my collection some might think I would be blindly extolling the merits Sunday night's performance. No gushing here. I was a bit let down and kind of left the Opera House somewhat flat, I guess that what you get when you have high expectations. I understand that the night was a to be somewhat freeform the chesiveness of the overall sound showed that. Unstructured and rambling though the triats of the individuals did shine through. I had a veery good veiw of Eno's hands and outside the gent that was to his right and behind he was quite inactive not to say that his small imput was not integral.Karl Hyde's voice was muddled and poorly mixed but I must say that Leo Abraham's guitar sounds were thrilling. The interplay on pianos by Chris Abrahams and Jon Hopkins was a highlight. Now Eno has seen out wonderful city let's hope he returns in another format.

Stop whinging about the ticket price down there! You are lucky antipodeans...I'm stuck up in the Emerald Isle. I know old Eno is a bit of a wally (remember the feathers and mascara?) but go just for Karl Hyde - a unique and brilliant talent, and a lovely guy.

Ticket price? It costs less than the return flight from Melbourne, and, I expect, will be, at least, 3 times more enjoyable.

why such hostility about this shows ticket price? it does cost money to put on such an extravagent show. should they put it on for free just because not everybody can afford it? perhaps those with this attitude would like to work for free or provide services at a low cost since not all of us can afford everything we want. perhaps Eno is not just interested in performing only for those who can afford to see him but rather for those willing to make a night of it..how much would you be willing to pay for a one night one of a kind show not likely to be repeated show?

Maybe he is as interested in making money as you are in saving it. No surprises there, just human nature. Anyhow just pay $60 for one of the concerts if you can't afford all 3 or stop complaining and get a better job.

$180? Mr Eno... what ever happened to the Scratch Orchestra? Why are you interested in performing only for those who can afford to see you? I know at least 100 000 people who cannot come to this event.

I believe this festival has ended up being a total egocentric trip down Eno's memory lane and pretentiously or late career deperately expensive.

The ability of 51 people to rate five stars for something that has not even happened yet (today is 10 June) shows profound faith in the concept of the Bald God idol! as you do not know who or what you are going to get at any show, at a cost of $60 an hour or $180 for the whole evening, I put my money ($270) into five separate shows with known and identified flesh and blood people turning up to play. Apart from Ladytron (absolute rubbish) I have seen 3 of 5 and rated them accordingly - not on some speculative "like, totally wow!" basis.
