LADYTRON

With special guest Pivot

Electro, electro clash, new wave, new new wave...Ladytron, the Liverpudlian four-piece has wilfully defied categorisation to become one of the UK's finest bands. Ingenious melodies, infectious beats, a labyrinth of layering, and a stack of distorted soul - they transcend the hedonism of dance and lay to waste the stock-standard electro pop scene.

With enigmatic vocals (part English, part Bulgarian), and a warm, mechanical sound shaped by antique synthesizers played in realtime, this remarkable band is remarkable live. '...like an overpowering, irresistible beast.' - The Independent

"Never before has Ladytron sounded so sinister, been so danceable and connected so well with its audience." - Paste Magazine

In my earlier post I forgot to mention that one of the numbers by the alleged "greatest band in the world" was (rightly - but as to their entire set) called "Predictable". The Australian review on 5 June said (correctly): "Four nights later, Ladytron took the same stage and delivered a completely different experience. The quartet added two members for the live show, but Ladytron's take on the early 1980s sounded rudimentary and uninspired. Clearly influenced by the Human League and Gary Numan, it was a pedestrian exercise in style over substance. With four synthesisers, two (matching) guitars and a drum kit at their disposal, it was astounding how few ideas Ladytron offered. The drummer seemed capable of only one beat, which the guitarist appeared determined to follow, while the bass guitarist kept his hair in the wind machine. Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo refused to deviate from their deadpan style of singing. This was compensated by the light show, but even that could not keep fans from the door once they had heard their favourite tune. In the Luminous program, Eno writes that these bands represent the future of music. That may true for Battles, but in the case of Ladytron it's a ludicrous suggestion." I totally agree.

Pivot were 35mins of inventiveness with 3 people, Ladytron only had about 2 ideas to play (and replay) - if that -and did this for 70mins with 6 people. Rubbish creatively and a waste of money. They could play an Oxford St disco and no-one would notice. Don't believe gushy London critics about who is the next big thing or the "best band in the world"- the Independent critic should be shot. Search out the Australian review - "all style, no substance" - I totally agree. Easily the worst thing in Luminous - did they get a gig from Eno cos they burgled the Roxy tune name? Definitely from the shallow end of the music pool.

Ladytron are one of the most unique sounding bands and I couldn't be happier about their return to Australia. Seeing them at the Sydney Opera House will simply be a magical experience.
